Mobile device vendors seem compelled to throw copious amounts of RAM into their smartphones, even if it cannot be properly utilized. Like the megapixel race, a device with 6 gigs of RAM just sounds better than one with 4 GB or less, even though it’s just one factor in all-round performance. Xiaomi is among those renowned for packing devices to the gills with power and in this spirit, is apparently prepping a version of the Mi 5s with 6 GB RAM.
Currently, the 3 GB RAM / 64 GB ROM Mi 5s costs the equivalent of $300 while the 4 GB / 128 GB model is $345. Curiously, this leak shows 6 GB of RAM but only 64 GB of storage. One might have hoped for more storage along with the RAM bump, particularly since the Mi 5s doesn’t include a microSD slot.
There’s no word on how much this 6 GB version will cost, if indeed Xiaomi plans to sell it. Given the prices of the current breed, though, it’ll be unlikely to exceed the $400 mark.
