Different iPhone 7 storage sizes have significant speed differences between each other

Alas, due to the way NAND flash storage works, the amount of memory is tied to the speed of reading and writing. This results in a speed difference between smaller and larger flash memory drives, something that’s evident in the new iPhones as well. The Unbox Therapy YouTube show made an example of that by comparing the read and write speeds of the 32GB and 256GB iPhone 7 using a benchmark tool and a timed iTunes transfer of a 1080p movie.

The result is that the 256GB unit has a write speed of 389 Mbyte/Sec and a read speed of 851 Mbyte/Sec, while the 32GB unit has a write speed of merely 42.4 Mbyte/sec and a read speed of 686Mbyte/sec. The difference is significant and it shows in everyday usage scenarios, such as transferring data between the iPhone and a computer. Sending a 4.2GB movie to the 256GB unit took 2 minutes and 34 seconds, while the 32GB unit took 3 minutes and 40 seconds. While that’s nothing one cannot bear live with, you should be aware of the performance difference between the various storage sizes the iPhone 7 is sold in.
