Jide, the company that previously launched the Android-based Remix OS for PCs, is now attempting to launch a new hardware product. It is using Kickstarter to help fund the Remix IO, a set-top TV box that can support 4K video streaming. Jide also claims it can also be used as a game console and, yes, as a PC.

The set-top box itself has a ARM-based RK3368 octa-core 64bit Cortex-A53 processor inside running at 1.5GHz, along with a PowerVR SGX6110 chip for its GPU. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, along with a microSD card slot to expand the storage by up to 128GB. It also has an HDMI 2.0 port, four USB 2.0 ports, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections and even a VGA port for those folks still using that old-fashioned display technology.

However, Jide says that the Remix IO comes alive thanks to the latest version of its Remix OS, which will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat. It will allow the set-top box to access to all Android apps from both the Google Play Store and the ones that are made exclusively for Android TV. It will also switch versions of apps between PC and TV mode when needed:

For example, when launching YouTube in TV Mode, Remix OS will open the Android TV version of the app and when in PC Mode it will open the standard mobile version.

Jide adds that while Android games are made for touchscreens, the Remix OS in the Remix IO box can allow users to map out commands so that games can be played with controllers, similar to a console, or with a keyboard and mouse like a PC.

The Remix IO Kickstarter campaign has just begun and is seeking $250,000 to reach its main goal in 30 days, and it’s always well on its way to achieving that milestone as of this writing. Backers who send in $99 will get one Remix IO box, plus a remote, when they begin shipping in March (assuming the Kickstarter goal is reached). There are also other reward tiers to buy more than one Remix IO box at a discount.

Developers can also check out the $299 reward tier, which will get them access to a Remix IO dev board, plus the company’s RemixOSKit, both of which will ship in January. This will allow developers to optimize their apps with the set-top box and OS. That price also includes a regular Remix IO box when it ships.
