Pixel Phones bought from the Google Store will be compatible with Verizon HD Voice and Wi-Fi calling

Reportedly, both Google and Verizon have confirmed that Google Store models of Pixel smartphones are compatible with Verizon’s HD Voice and Wi-Fi calling functionality. That’s good news if you are a Verizon customer, but plan on buying a Pixel smartphone from Google or another retailer.

However, there’s no word on whether Pixels support these features on other carriers’ networks. Only Verizon compatibility is confirmed, which means you might potentially lose on those two carrier-specific features if you are a subscriber to AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or a smaller carrier’s networks.

We also heard that Verizon is locking down the bootloader of Pixel smartphones sold through it, which will stand in the way of those looking to experiment with the Pixel phones’ hardware by developing, rooting, and flashing custom software.

Tech-minded customers might be better off buying Pixels right from Google, assuming their bootloaders can be easily unlocked through ADB commands. We’ll need some more intel on that to confirm, but it’s highly likely that this would be the case.
