Microsoft Hololens finally ventures outside of North America in latest expansion

Like it or not, virtual reality is here and upon us. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift launched earlier this year, Samsung’s Gear VR has been out for quite some time, and Sony will be launching their own VR headset for the PlayStation 4 later this year. There’s no doubt that virtual reality truly is changing the landscape of mobile technology and the way we interact with it, and among all of these devices, one of the most interesting ones is Microsoft’s HoloLens.

HoloLens is technically an augmented reality headset instead of a traditional virtual reality one, but it still falls in that same general category. Microsoft first announced the headset back in January of 2015, and as we inch closer and closer to its 2 year announcement anniversary, Microsoft has finally announced that the headset will finally be making its way outside of North America. The HoloLens Development Edition has been available in the United States and Canada for some time now, and the headset costs $3,000 and CAD $4,000 in each country respectively.

In the new announcement from Microsoft, HoloLens will be making its way to 6 different countries across the globe. Those countries and their respective pricing are as follows —

While pre-orders are open now, Microsoft has said that HoloLens won’t start shipping out to these countries until «late November.» Although the headset is still only being offered as a Development Edition, it’s still great to see it finally makes its way to folks outside of North America. Microsoft hasn’t outlined any additional information in regards to further global expansion, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see more and more countries get access to the company’s AR headset in the near future.
