Google Assistant, the new digital helper found in the new Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones (and the upcoming Google Home speaker), now has some new ways to connect to other smart devices and app, thanks to the new IFTTT (If This Then That) channel.

What is IFTTT? Basically, it’s a web-based service that lets you user what it calls “recipes”, which are small programs designed to connect to the many, many apps and devices that support IFTTT. IFTTT allows anyone to create their own recipes, or use any that are made by others.

The Google Assistant IFTTT channel already has a number of recipes set up. So if you own a Google Pixel, you can use them to, say, create a voice note on Evernote by just speaking a command into Google Assistant.  If you own a Fitbit, you can ask the app to log your weight with the IFTTT support, or to shut down a TV via a Harmony remote, and much more.

This will certainly open up the use of Google’s new digital assistant to many more devices and services, and make it much more help to use beyond the Google Pixel phones. Google already has announced Actions on Google, an open developer platform that will let other apps and products to work with Google Assistant. It is suppose to launch sometime in December.

What sort of IFTTT devices and services will you be using with the new Google Assistant channel?
