A museum in Tokyo presented its two latest recruits on Tuesday, two androids that have been developed by Osaka University.
The life-like Kodomoroid (a child android) and Otonaroid (an adult android) were introduced by their creator, Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University, at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.
«Human is the most ideal medium or form that humans can easily relate to, as there are so many functions in the human brain. As technology develops, the form of many devices will be closer to that of human form,» said Ishiguro.
Kodomoroid will act as a newsreader for the museum’s young visitors, while Otonaroid will work as a «museum communicator».
A small incident during the news conference highlighted some near-human frailty in the robots.
Otonaroid had problems responding to Ishiguro at one point due to a wireless communication problem at the venue.
The issue was fixed later and Otonaroid lightly waved off the problem, saying it «was nervous» because it had yet to be officially appointed as a museum guide.
The robots are made with silicon skin and artificial muscles to achieve a realistic human likeness.
